Premenstrual Syndrome

Premenstrual Syndrome Overview

Pre Menstrual Syndrome has been a common complaint amongst women for the last 40 or more years. Many theories have been put forward as to why it had become so common during the last half of the 20th century and into the 21st century. Early ideas about hormonal abnormalities and the success of hormonal treatments have largely been disproved. There is something about our 21st century lifestyle that has contributed significantly to the problem.

The treatment approach that we have pioneered for PMS over the last 20 years has centred on dietary change, exercise and appropriate use of nutritional supplements. Each of these three approaches is of proven value and combining them in a way that suits the individual patient results in a high degree of success. From monitoring our own cases 85% to 90% of women reported considerable improvement from following the PMS programme.

Interestingly, conventional treatments with anti-depressants and/or hormonal treatment may not be suitable for many women or can be associated with unacceptable side effects.

It appears that dietary and lifestyle factors influence a woman’s sensitivity to normal fluctuations in hormonal levels that occur during her menstrual cycle. Three to four months on the programme is long enough for a change in diet and better nutrition to help with many PMS symptoms.

Top Mairin’s story

Mairin Gallagher …. turned to Maryon again when she became perimenopausal in her early forties whilst at the same time having lots of stress to deal with. Maryon had remedied her PMS several years ago and she came back because she felt she had lost control.

‘I suppose I got a bit complacent after sorting out severe PMS and didn’t pay too much attention to myself as I was too busy dealing with the needs of my family. My teenage daughter was going through a wild child phase and my husband had a nervous breakdown. My periods had become irregular and very heavy, leaving me feeling drained. My mood swings and depression had returned and I was feeling incredibly tired. I got back in touch with Maryon and completed a new questionnaire and diet diary. I knew she would provide me with the encouragement and advice I needed to deal with my current situation. I made all the changes to my diet that Maryon suggested and changed my supplement regime. I got back to exercising and I retrained and qualified as a special needs assistant. I do feel like I am back in control of my life and I feel much more alive and energetic. I am fully briefed now about how to get through the perimenopause in good health and I am much more at peace with myself. As usual I am very grateful to Maryon for all her caring efforts.’
